Storefront

Overview:

Single Fin Thai-Sushi Restaurant is located at 2424 South Croatan Highway on the bypass in Nags Head, North Carolina. They are open 11:30-9, Tuesday-Sunday and offer lunch and dinner. If you are driving down the bypass in Nags Head it is in the same strip mall as Dunkin. Single Fin offers authentic Thai food and fresh-made sushi. They have Thai staples like pad Thai, pad see ew, and drunken noodles. If you want something in a bowl they have poke and curries.

Here you can eat in the dining room, or order takeout to go. You can also watch the sushi chefs make your order fresh if you sit at the sushi bar. There is also a traditional bar to order drinks from. For takeout they have a website to order on or you can call the store. At the moment, Single Fin does not offer delivery through DoorDash, Uber Eats, or Grubhub.

The Food:

Fried Calamari
Fried Calamari

To start the meal we ordered the fried calamari. It came with a sweet and spicy sauce and was garnished with carrots, lettuce, and peanuts. I thought this was the low point of the meal. The calamari pieces were too small and had more breading than meat. They were also a little bland and did not have much seasoning. I would not recommend this dish.

Fresh Rolls

The next appetizer we ordered was the fresh rolls. They had shrimp, veggies, Thai basil, and were wrapped in soy paper. I thought they were refreshing on a hot day and the peanut sauce that came with it was also good. If you do not like basil or Thai basil I would ask them to remove it because it was very strong in the rolls.

Pad See Ew w/ Beef
Pad See Ew w/ Beef

The pad see ew was ordered by someone else in my group but I was able to try it. It has thick rice noodles, carrots, broccoli, cabbage, and slices of beef. They also cook everything in a brown sauce. The beef was cooked pretty good and the noodles were soft and chewy. This contrasted well with the crunchy carrots and broccoli. Also if you get protein in any noodle dish that does not already have meat, they will charge you 4-5 dollars extra.

Pad See Ew w/ Fried Tofu

The next dish was also pad see ew but this one had fried tofu instead of beef. I thought the tofu was cooked perfectly with it being crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. For this dish we asked to have all the veggies except for the broccoli removed. You are not able to make substitutions when ordering online. However, when I called to place the order, they were able to make substitutions over the phone.

Pad Thai

Single Fin also made the pad Thai very well. The presentation of this dish when you open the lid is impressive. The veggies and noodles with the crushed peanuts looks great. The taste was also fantastic and it was apparent that this is one of the most popular dishes served here.

General Tso’s Chicken
General Tso’s Chicken

The dish that I personally ordered was the General Tso’s chicken. It came with a side of jasmine rice and was garnished with cilantro. The chicken itself was cooked in a sweet pineapple onion sauce with chili flakes as well. You could definitely taste the classic General Tso’s sauce but the spicy chili flakes were very present in the dish. It was definitely one of the spiciest dishes we ordered. Also the description of the dish said it came with pieces of onions and pineapple. However, I was not able to find any pineapple and I only found a few pieces of onion in the dish. The chicken was also strips of white meat which was also different. When General Tso’s is cooked with white meat, the dish is normally called amazing chicken. Regardless, this was definitely one of the best General Tso’s chicken dishes I have ever eaten.

Panang Curry w/ Jasmine Rice
Panang Curry w/ Jasmine Rice

The Panang curry was the last entree we ordered and it came with a side of jasmine rice. I tried a little bit of this dish and I thought it was the best Panang curry sauce I have tried.

In Pittsburgh, I have ordered Panang curry from Red Orchid and it was good but the spices were more pronounced in this curry. At first I thought the portion size for this dish was small but when we poured out the container of sauce and veggies it filled an entire soup bowl.

Service:

I ordered our dinner over the phone for takeout. The man who took my order was prompt and accurate with writing down everything. He also read my entire order back to me which confirmed everything I ordered, even the substitutions. He told me the order would be ready in 15 minutes. I was surprised at how quick it would be and hurried to the restaurant within 10 minutes.

When we arrived to get the order they were just finishing it up. I thought it only took a couples minutes to be on our way with the order. The staff at the bar who gave us our food was friendly and prompt in getting our order.

Atmosphere:

Single Fin has a great interior with a small bar greeting you at the entrance. Past the bar to the right is a decent size dining room and a sushi bar on the far wall. The decorations inside were pretty cool. There is a sign on the wall when you first walk in that lists some of the menu items.

Rating: Good |⭐⭐⭐⭐✩|

Single Fin is definitely a new staple restaurant for me at the Outer Banks. They offer top notch Thai food in the Outer Banks which is a perfect fit. We did not order the sushi, but many reviews say it is amazing. On top of that the curries, noodles dishes, and appetizers were great. The only thing I did not like was the calamari. Also we thought the price we paid for everything was a little steep. However, everything at restaurants has gotten expensive and this is a beach town so expect prices to be higher where tourists visit. We will definitely be coming back to try the sushi and poke bowls another time!
