Thai Tamarind (Glenshaw)

Thai Tamarind (Glenshaw)

Storefront

Overview:

Thai Tamarind is a new restaurant situated on the corner of Mt Royal Blvd and Bridle Rd. It replaced the previous restaurant, Le Thai Cafe, in the summer and has since been open. Thai Tamarind is already a familiar restaurant in the Pittsburgh area. The Bellevue location has been open for some time and is highly rated. I have already reviewed the one in Bellevue, which you can check out here

The new location is in Glenshaw, part of Shaler Township in the North Hills. Here they offer the same classic dishes as they do in Bellevue such as pad Thai, pad see ew, and curries. Thai Tamarind in Glenshaw offers dine-in, takeout, along with delivery. If you do choose delivery, they are currently only on Uber Eats. Below I have also detailed the current hours of operation as listed on Google.

The Food:

Pot Stickers
Pot Stickers

Thai Tamarind has many delicious starters for you to choose from before eating your entree. We went with the pot stickers for our first appetizer. They are filled with pork, topped with diced scallions, and served with sweet and sour sauce. You can have them steamed or pan-fried and we went with the latter. I liked the crunch of the crispy wonton wrapper with the juicy pork filling and dipped in the sauce. We got three in an order which is an ok portion size.

Summer Roll

Our next appetizer was the summer rolls. They are rice paper rolls with lettuce, chicken, shrimp, vermicelli noodles, avocado, cucumber, shredded carrot, and basil. I thought these rolls were tasty and refreshing. They have lots of veggies and protein inside and with the cooked noodles it makes for a great texture.

Spicy Lo Mein
Spicy Lo Mein

The first entree we ordered was the spicy lo mein. It had stir-fried lo mein noodles, bell peppers, string beans, onions, and a spicy garlic sauce. I really enjoyed the heat level of the noodles. It was not too hot but just enough to give the dish a kick. The crunchy veggies balanced the chewy noodles. I also liked how they can add protein to most of the dishes. Chicken, pork, and tofu are no extra charge, and beef or shrimp is $2 extra.

Sweet & Sour Pork
Sweet & Sour Pork

I ordered the sweet and sour dish which had pineapple, cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, and bell peppers, in a Thai sweet and sour sauce. Since some of the proteins are at no extra charge, I got the sliced pork. The sauce was excellent and was clearly a homemade sweet and sour which is not very common. It has a much less strong sweet taste than the bright red sauce you normally get at a Chinese buffet. My only complaint with this dish was the pork was a little overcooked but I appreciated that they did not charge extra for it.

Hawaiian Fried Rice

The Hawaiian fried rice was also another tasty dish we ordered. It had stir-fried rice, egg, pineapple, onions, raisins, cashews, and curry powder. Thai Tamarind's fried rice was flavorful, loaded with great ingredients, and also was not very greasy. Sometimes other restaurants use too much oil when cooking fried rice and it makes the whole dish greasy, but not this place. The chicken was tender and went well with all the other veggies.

Thai Spring Roll

With every dish at Thai Tamarind, you get a Thai spring roll. These are similar to egg rolls as they have a wonton wrapper on the outside which is deep fried and various veggies fill the inside. We had three entrees so they gave us a bag with three spring rolls to go with our meals.

Service:

I thought the service was good at Thai Tamarind. The only trouble I had was the online website was difficult to use to place an order. I ended up just calling to order which was much easier. The food was ready in 20 minutes and the staff giving us the food were very friendly. They have recently added the restaurant to Uber Eats so you can now get delivery if you do not want to pick up the food.

Atmosphere:

The inside of Thai Tamarind seemed just as cozy as the Bellevue location. We only saw the takeout area in the front but it had some decorations and new paint. They also seemed to be still getting the decorations put together since they just opened. I hope to eat in the dining room in the future to see how it compares to the other restaurant.

Rating: Excellent |⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐|

Thai Tamarind in Glenshaw is a great addition to the area. It is located on a stretch of Mt Royal that does not have many restaurants so it is great to finally have another one. This place is definitely an improvement to the previous Le Thai Cafe, and hopefully, they stick around for a long time here. I enjoyed the food and quick service of this restaurant. This is certainly a place you need to try if you like Thai food. Also if you want to read about the original location, check out my blog post about the Bellevue location
